A post office with history

The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photo

Frank Heller checks his P.O. box at the Puunene Post Office earlier this month. Heller said he has been using the little post office next to shuttered Puunene Mill on Hansen Road for many years. “I love it,” he said. “It’s a great post office.” The wooden facility on Hansen Road was built in 1939 and may have first served the Kahului Railroad before becoming a post office in the 1950s, according to a local postmaster. It is the oldest operated post office on Maui and the only one of two to still use old-style brass post office boxes — the other is Hana Post Office. A staffer said P.O. boxes are currently available to rent.
