Advance showing of ‘Weight of the Nation’ on May 9

KAHULUI - An advanced screening of HBO's documentary "The Weight of the Nation" is set for May 9, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's McCoy Theater.

The showing of "Consequences," part one of the four-part documentary, is sponsored by Kaiser Permanente Hawaii and is part of a public health campaign about weight-related issues.

"The Weight of the Nation" features case studies and interviews with leading experts and with individuals and families struggling with obesity. "Consequences" examines the scope of the obesity epidemic and explores the serious health consequences of being overweight or obese.

The documentary series debuts May 14 on HBO. More information on the series may be found at theweightofthenation.hbo.com. No recording devices permitted.

Following the screening at about 6:30 p.m., there will be a forum led by Mayor Alan Arakawa. Other participants are to include Dr. George Talbot, physician-in-charge of Kaiser Permanente Maui Clinics; Rhiannon Chandler, executive director of Community Work Day; and John Tomoso, executive director of Hui No Ke Ola Pono, the Native Hawaiian health care system for Maui.

Others supporting and participating in the showing are HBO Documentary Films, the state Department of Health, The Institute of Medicine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation.
