Eddie, thank you for your sober thoughts (did you see me on the beach this morning with a beer?).

There has to be a way to accommodate the cultural aspect of our lives while moving into a changing future. I wish someone could descend from the clouds and tell us how to do it.

I like the "old culture" but I still want my TV's, cars, CT scans and kidney dialysis machines.

(Isn't ICE a new invention? Can do without THAT!)

It seems a shame that we keep solving the problems of a few by restricting everyone.

Like no parking along the road to Kanaha. That was put in place because a homeless people started accumulating trash and junk and turning the place into a health hazard.

So instead of doing something like having a no-parking tow-away one from 2am to 3am and enforcing it, they just banned all parking all the time - even when there is no legal beach parking free.

And now, because we have (most likely some of the same people) getting drunk and fighting (I'm assuming this is why...I don't know the situation) ALL of us can't drink.

Surely there is a way to deal with these bad apples without curtailing the activities of the vast majority of us who are good neighbors, take care of our parks and beaches and just have fun.

Eddie - your point is very reasonable.

The Charlie Young Beach is a special case where there has been a war between vacation rental owners and beach-goers.

This is just one more move in that war. It seems to me that this isn't a situation of excessive drinking so much as very rich people who don't like regular folks playing on "their" beach.

sorry i didnt realize we were dealing with a sober gang, as for respecting the culture there are different ways to do that, i dont think that leaving everything exactly the same does anyone any good, i agree that some tourists come here and do not respect us, but the truth of the matter is without them we would be a very poor island, so we have to find a way to protect the past while moving into the future, i also dont see what this has to do with banning alcohol on the beach, as far as i'm concerned the beach should be enjoyable for everyone not just those who are drinking , and before anyone says it i know that not everyone who drinks causes trouble, but enough of them do, and that keeps familys away from the beach, maybe we should have specific beaches that are for adults and some that are for familys, but until that designation is made i have no problem with banning alcohol on all of them

Sundance says "I would like to hear her become a part of our community and stop separating it for her misguided agendas."

Thanks, but no thanks. The tide of exploitation and disrespect for the 'aina and Hawaiian culture may be becoming the majority on Maui...sadly...but I have no intention of joining it.

Eddie - I was complaining about a robbery and beating that had nothing to do with alcohol and a lot to do with a known predatory violent gang whose leader was arrested again for robbery after he was booked and released for assault.

The fact that I supported Wayne Nishiki does not mean that I agree with EVERYTHING he does.

I know these are mainlanders because they sign their complaining letters to the council with their mainland addresses. They are the absentee TVR owners at Kamaole One.

As far as the separation of cultures on this island, let's not pretend it doesn't exist.

There are those (born on the mainland or born on Maui) who respect Hawaiian culture, who care for the island and who see themselves as caretakers of Maui.

Then there are those permeated in the Western culture of me, mine, acquire more money and possessions, use and abuse the land. Some may have been born here. Many more have recently come to Maui not for what Maui is but to exploit it.

Mahalo Eddie. it's fun to listen to Karen logic but frustrating at the same time. I suppose the ban in Honokawai was mainlanders too. These guys who abuse things screwed up their own gig and now ours too. This council is determined to make Maui he no more fun place, ban it all.

Ms Karen likes to throw around the anti mainlander slogan.. I would like to hear her become a part of our community and stop separating it for her misguided agendas. By the way, it is your beloved council member forcing this issue through. Go talk to your buddies, or did I miss something were you in council chambers testifying? They are begging for people to show and speak.

As far as the pot goes,we have watched this for 30 years now and has it worked? I say legalize it, tax it, and move onto something important like meth. The justice system needs to stop putting these violent offenders back into or community. Now there's a crime.

Wow these mainlanders who own vacation rentals near Charlie Young Beach are really powerful.

i'm starting to think you just like to argue/disagree karen, i can remember a few months back you complaining about public safety, i forget the details but i believe it had something to do with a police coverup of a fight something like that, anyways how can you complain then and now when they want to ban alcohol from the beach? as we all know some people can not handle their booze and ruin it for others, that being said there are bars for drinking the beach is a family area and should be treated as such and before you go to your standard anwser i am 43 and have lived here all my life, so no haole bubble for me

It's OK John - I'm mad as he** and I don't want to take it anymore either. It's time to legalize MJ and restore the personal freedoms of individuals instead of government for the big hotels that grease the pockets of our council members. (Or right - I mean loan money that doesn't need to be paid back, and submit to ethics panels whose rulings are never revealed!)

wITH AN OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OFNTHE VRESPONDENTS AFFIRMING THAT MARIJUANA SHOULD BE LEGALIZED. iTS A SLAM DUNK TO PASS IF BROUGHT TO A VOTE. WE NEED TO FIELD SYMPATHTIC CANDIDATES IN OUR COUNTY AND STATE GOVERMENT WHO WILL MAKE IT HAPPEN. THE GROUP CURRENTLY IN POWER ALL NEED TO GO. THEY HAVE ASSAULTED OUR SMALL BUSINESS COMMUNITY AT EVERY TURN. ANYONE OUT THERE WHO DOESN'T SEE ALL THIS AS RACIALLY MOTIVATED HAVE THEIR HEADS IN THE SAND. THROW THEM ALL OUT OF OFFICE. WE NEED TO RECALL OUR ENTIRE HAWAII GOVERMENT. WAKE UP POLITICIANS. WE THE PEOPLE, NOT YOU AND YOUR SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS. YOU HAVE FAILED MISERABLY AT RUNNING OUR STATE.

Wow these mainlanders who own vacation rentals near Charlie Young Beach are really powerful.

First they illegally extended their property onto the beach by "planting native plants" and watering them...ON PUBLIC BEACH.

Then they spend hours and hours and hours bugging our county council members about the volleyball players who have been there for 20 years.

Now they want all alcohol banned on the beach.

CHILL OUT, you up tight people! The beach does not exist so you can make a buck renting to vacationers.

This is why we should not allow any more building on the shoreline. People begin to think they own the beach and want to get rid of everyone.

Its all connected. The drug war has cost one trillion tax dollars. Add to that the lost productivity of the millions of working tax payers destroyed, and unemployable, after being convicted. Many are no longer productive, they are now economic liabilities of the state for life. If economics is your priority, last year 700,000 Americans were prosecuted for marijuana crimes the vast majority for possession. The drug war is a civil war with one faction imposing its will at gun point and great cost on the other. Drugs are a problem, a health problem, you should be ready to help your brothers and sisters instead of destroying them. We need each other. You do not have to approve of drug use, but the drug war is worse than the drugs. There are more drugs, stronger drugs, they are cheaper and anyone even kids can get them, that is the reality of the drug war. Regulation, honest education, and treatment is better. What have you got for your trillion dollars, screwed if you ask me.

MBoner: I just saw on the news that your Goddess, Sarah Palin, is quitting as Governor of Alaska. Now she and her clan of barefoot, pregnant brats and dork husband can plan their assault on the White House. Is the GOP in b-a-a-a-d shape or what?

ghost13 makes some good points. Our economy, culture, and way of life are under assault and the News is asking about MJ laws?

Our priorities are misplaced!

Hey joker slow down your getting paranoid. That was no threat, it was a comment on how ridicules the MJ laws are. I guess it went over your head. You will have do more than call people names who are on your side if we are going to get the law changed.

Listen folks. Why is the Maui News posting such trivial matters. They need to focus on the current economic crisis and the pending collapse of our entire society. I'm not a doomsayer, but everyone needs to pay attention to what is going on. Research and read what the current predictions are: Total collapse of our currency, the commercial real-estate bubble, the government stimulus bubble, and unemployment exceeding 25% nationwide. Gold and silver are the only things that will be worth anything. Stock up on can goods, guns, and ammunition. If you really need to smoke marijuana make sure you stock up on that too. It may help ease your pain to cope with the pending disaster.

Listen all you dopers, stoners and potheads. Legalize MJ and what next? Coke, meth, drinking age to 16 yrs, and crack. Stop it all now!

Yes MauiB, all teachers selling to their students as young as 12. Our classrooms become smoking conventions instead of learning centers. They sit, smoke and laugh at each other for no apparent reason. We all know the age limit won't stop anyone under 21 from smoking the devil's cigarettes. I think PrivateJok is one of those students.
