The Mayor obviously has to go with the "majority rules" factor. It would take someone with sheer determination and "smarts" to figure out how one could find a solution for the "good of all". When in "doubt stay out" would be optimum but "money talks and bullkaka walks". So again the people (minority) got to take it to the "palapala" and shut these people down. Just like Moloka'i Ranch. It can be done.

When Wailea 670 and all other approved construction projects are complete, the cry of union officials will still be "we need work for our people." "Show me the water" motto seems perfectly reasonable to me. And, Maui News should declare this poll invalid and refrain from additional polls until software programs prevent double poll entries.

Since nobody seems willing to answer my question about what specifically "affordable housing" means here, I'll speak to the issue of voting multiple. In order to not reinvent the wheel, I'll quote part of Slashdot's disclaimer about their similar online polls: "This whole thing is wildly inaccurate. Rounding errors, ballot stuffers, dynamic IPs, firewalls. If you're using these numbers to do anything important, you're insane."

Yea, I should move on? Move on where? I was born and raised and care about the mess Charmaine is making OUR island. I guess we locals should just move on. Nothing to see here. Sorry, cant do it. This development is the worst of the worse. The affordable is a joke cause there is a clause in there that lets them NOT build it if the county doesnt provide the water. What water? Last I checked we have to ration our water. Sorry, maybe I should stop worrying about it and just use all the water I want, cause aparently there is no problem.

Keep in mind, I KNOW we have water on this island we just have an inept county government that cant develop any new sources and get it right. so until they do, we have no water. Come on people. sheesh...

Hey Michael, You just admitted to cheating! Teach me how to vote twice too!

Michael

Actually, what the current poll result shows is that the poll counter is currently malfuctioning, allowing multiple votes from the same person, and the unions have discovered that, and are slamming it. It just now let me vote twice, just by logging out, and back in...ALL previous polls on the issue went very heavy AGAINST the development, such as the one which asked if we approved of the council vote...

I appreciate that Mayor Tavares considered both sides of this development. I would rather see a planned community with 50% of the units affordable (instead of none), one golf course (instead of two), and protections for the most environmentally sensitive areas (as opposed to what was allowed under the previous zoning). As for an EIS, it is necessary in order for the developer to complete the road widening and wastewater facility, both of which are required under the conditions of the project. As for water, if it's not available when the developer is ready to apply for the building permits (later on), the project won't move forward--it's that simple. While I'm not thrilled about adding 700 additional high-end homes, I commend the Mayor for being consistent in her stance that community plans need to be followed. This was also her reasoning with regard to enforcing laws regulating TVRs. Whether or not you agree with her decision, at least she shows respect for the process and the law.

Hateful words bring on more hate. ChickenLittle should move on and the newspapers should help our island heal. Do your homework, people. Mayor Tavares did.

The environmentalists it is their fault that we don’t have the homes for our friend’s and families. Their version of smart growth is moratorium driving the cost of homes as high as the sky. And water there is more water on this island then Oahu we just need it do the work to build storage. If you ask me did the mayor and county council did the best thing for the working families of Maui. We have lost to much already As your poll shows the people of Maui have a county council and a Mayor that listened to the people the majority not the minority that is why, I VOTE. And just remember Jesus was a carpenter.

Aloha Maui It is very sad that some people have lost sight of the real problems that we have here on Maui. The very high cost of housing, I can’t tell you how many friends and family I have lost. They just moved away, I work 2 and 3 jobs just to make ends meet. Some of the friend’s I have, live with their parents and grandparents not because they want two, it is because they have to. Why? The Rent’s are out of control, the cost of a homes are away too high. How do we bring the cost of homes down? We need to build affordable homes not stop development. We must build homes for the people that live and work here and build the homes close to where there are jobs so we will take people off the roads. With the cost of gas people can’t afford to drive long distances. We build for our children so they can live here and not move away! Please forgive me but I am sorry We don’t listen to all of the misinformation that all of hippies are saying save the wiliwili. NO save me from

I've seen a lot of references to "affordable housing" in the reporting on this project, but have yet to see exactly what is meant by "affordable." Could somebody please define exactly what affordable housing means in this case? Are we talking $600/mo apartments, or $500k condos?

Reading Mr. Duberstein's comments confirms the fact he is low on facts and high on rhetoric. Mr. West should be applauded for looking out for his people regardless of What is going on in south Maui. What a comparison, Mr. West looking out for his employees and their housing needs and Mr. Dubersteins rant with no facts.

I am befuddled by Mr Newhouse's comments. As I drive around S Maui there's building going on all over. When will Wailea 670 work commence? Next month? Next 6 months? If that's what you and other advocates are waiting for, your employees face a long wait. This project's a dud, isolating Mr West's members in a waterless N Kihei industrial park with no schools or parks. Obviously you couldn't care less about adequate EIS, sewage destroying reefs, bulldozing cultural sites and valuable natural resources. Well, we really need more mega-mansions if we continue down this road converting Maui Nei into Oahu Jr.

My name is Steven Newhouse, I have been in the heavy construction business both public and private for over 29 years in Hawaii, mostly on Maui. I laid of the last of what was a crew of 38 people a month ago. I have no new work for them in sight for the next 2-3 months. These people are local people who pay local taxes, buy all the neccesities of life locally. That means 40 % less to live on. I am a builder, of communities, of alot of things that everyone takes for granted. Turn on your water, lights, drive on a road to the store, buy your groceries in a store, flush your commode, yeah, thats right I build roads, pipelines, buildings, install underground utilities, parks, medical clinics, schools, subdivisions, resorts, golf courses, and yes I build people. From apprentice or beginner, to journeyman. I have seen these people grow up, get married, raise families, and build a better Maui. Mahalo to Mayor Tavares.

Aloha I’m Stephen West of the ILWU on the behalf of all of our members we would like to say a huge mahalo to the Mayor Charmaine Tavares and the Maui County Council for supporting Honua’ula. This project will provide Affordable housing for our members, their families and the community. Mahalo to Councilmembers Joe Pontanilla, Danny Mateo, Gladys Baisa, Michael Molina & Michael Victorino. You have our support now and in the future as we all work together to provide the much deserved quality of life for our people of Maui County.

At first I didn't agree with the council's vote to pass. Then I hoped the mayor would veto. But what she says makes sense. A veto would give up 400 acres automatically. That's ridiculous. At least I know she looks at everything and doesn't scare easy by all the noise everyone makes. I don't trust the developer Jenks but we'll be watching how he takes care of all of the 30 plus conditions!

How can we remove the mayor?? Is there a process to do it? There has to be a way. Im sure we can get enough signatures in a weekend to do it.

Rather unfortunate decision. No attempt to seriously deal with the water issue, indeed affordable housing with the Albatross of multimillion dollar structures that can not be sustained is not affordable but self destructive. View Dowling’s Maluaka project to see the ultimate in resource destruction. The walls are up and the ocean view and access is gone forever. Dr. George R. Harker

The mayor and county council are elected to represent us. Why don't they? Is A & B bigger than we? Yes, and more generous too.

The Mayor avoided the real issues in issuing her statement of why she signed the bill. She could have upheld the law and the integrity of the planning process by insisting upon a complete change of zoning application and up-to-date EIS. But, it seems it's all about money down there at the County building. Too bad for the future of South Maui. We could have done so much better.
