Ask Marilyn: Are Holiday Lights a Waste of Energy?
John Stratton of Baltimore, Maryland, writes:
Marilyn: Especially in December, many people display outdoor holiday lights. Some displays consist of hundreds or even thousands of lights. Do you think holiday lights are a wise use of electricity?
Well, maybe they're not exactly wise, but I think holiday lighting ranks near the bottom of the not-exactly-wise ways to use electricity. I'm always happy to see people displaying warm, positive messages—good cheer, peace on earth, love to mankind. How nice! Compare this use of electricity to the theaters in their neighborhood displaying movies with unspeakable violence. I'd much rather see the latter go dark in December. And all the rest of the year, for that matter.
