Ask Marilyn: Vitamins and Minerals: Yes or No?

Anonymous in Baltimore, Maryland, writes:

Marilyn: Thank you for answering my question about whether multivitamin supplements can cause cancer. (October 17, 2012) I'm happy that there's no evidence they do, even though my doctor says they can. (I'm going to talk with him about this!) Coincidentally, later on the same day you answered my question, I read that a study done by doctors at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston showed that multivitamin supplements, when taken daily, resulted in 8 percent fewer cases of cancer in men over age 50, over a period of 10 years. So this is the opposite of what my doctor told me a couple of weeks ago!

Marilyn responds:

Yet the headlines are easy to misinterpret, readers. Before drawing conclusions or changing your habits, I suggest that you read more about the study. Here's a good, brief article on the subject.
