Ask Marilyn: An Alphabet Puzzler

Ron Chetlin of Greenville, Texas, writes:

Marilyn: Back when my daughter was in third grade, she asked me for help with a math homework problem. As someone with a math degree, I was not happy when I couldn't solve it. The kids were learning about sets, and the problem involved dividing the set of alphabet letters into two subsets. The subsets were {A, E, F, ...} and {B, C, D, ...}. Over the years, I have found that those who can figure out the rule do so in less than 30 seconds. After that time period, it's almost impossible.

Marilyn responds:

What do you think, readers? The answer will appear tomorrow.
