With the third election printout at about 10 p.m. Saturday with all precincts reporting, Rep. Justin Woodson defeated challenger and former Mayor James "Kimo" Apana for the 9th House District seat.
Woodson had 2,000 votes or 52.1 percent to Apana's 1,688 votes or 44 percent. With no opponent in the general election, Woodson will return to the state Legislature.
In other closely watched Maui County races, Council Member Elle Cochran received 40 percent of the vote (10,714 votes) and will face Ka'ala Buenconsejo, who finished second (27.7 percent, 7,430 votes). Rick Nava (17.5 percent, 4,684 votes) was eliminated by finishing third.
In the Makawao-Haiku-Paia council residency race, Mike Molina garnered more votes (10,862 votes, 40.5 percent) than incumbent Mike White (9,562 votes, 35.7 percent) in a four-way race. They are headed for a showdown in the general election.
In the mayor's race, Mayor Alan Arakawa has a commanding lead with nearly 64 percent of the vote with 17,093 votes. His challenger in the general election will be Tamara Paltin, who polled 11.9 percent and 3,199 votes.
