The Maui News

A 40-year-old man serving a 14-day sentence escaped from the Maui Community Correctional Center around 9:40 p.m. Saturday, officials said.

Junior Jorju was discovered missing during a 9:30 p.m. head count, the state Department of Public Safety said. He was last accounted for at the facility's 7 p.m. head count.

Jorju was serving time for driving without a license and criminal contempt of court, both misdemeanor convictions. He's classified as a "community custody" inmate, which is considered the lowest-risk level, officials said.

After Jorju went missing, the Wailuku jail went into lockdown, and guards searched inside and outside the facility. Police were called immediately, officials said.

An investigation of how Jorju escaped was ongoing.

Jorju began serving his sentence July 7, and he was supposed to be released July 20.

The escaped inmate is described as being 5 foot 4 inches tall and weighing 135 pounds. He has brown hair and eyes.

Anyone who sees Jorju should not approach him but call 911 to report his sighting, officials said.
