Vic-Maui’s second fleet leaves British Columbia

July 6, 2014
The Maui News
Entrants in the second fleet of the Victoria to Maui International Yacht Race sail away from British Columbia on Saturday. The nine yachts in the faster group took off two days behind the slower first fleet in the biennial race. The second fleet comprised Kinetic, the 2010 winner on corrected time, as well as Anduril, String Theory, Family Affair, Longboard, Alegria, JAM, Kahuna and New Haven. Passepartout, skippered by Peter Shainin out of Anacortes (Wash.) Yacht Club, was the leader among boats that departed Thursday, followed by Turicum and Losloper. Avalon, Bedlam II and Turnagain form the rest of the first fleet. The race requires sailing a minimum of 2,308 nautical miles — a nautical mile is slightly more than 1.15 statue miles, the measure used on land. The first boat will likely arrive at the finish line off Lahaina within two weeks, and the event ends with a banquet, which this year is scheduled for July 26 at the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa in Kaanapali, with ticket sales open to the public.
