Umpire shares joy of game with Little Leaguers

July 4, 2014
The Maui News

With one out in the last inning and a 15-0 game well in hand, Big Island umpire Lyle Cabacungan has some fun with Central East Maui All-Stars Cade Kalehuawehe (from left), Kaipo Haole, Konnel Palmeira and Mochi Dukelow during a pitching change in their Little League District III Majors Division tournament championship win over West Maui on Wednesday. ''I said, 'OK boys, how many pitches you think it's going to take to get this game over with?' '' Cabacungan said. The players thought about it and then offered up their best guesses. "Just having fun, getting them thinking," he said. Cabacungan said he was raised on Maui and played on the Baldwin High School basketball team in 1972-73 before moving to the Big Island. After Wednesday's game at the Eddie Tam Complex in Makawao, he happened to run into his former coach at Baldwin, Jon Garcia.
