Michael was born in 1958 in Kansas City, MO. After graduating from high school in Arlington Heights, Illinois, Mike moved to the island of Oahu. After several years living in Oahu, he moved to Maui.
Mike died unexpectedly at his home on June 5, 2014 at the age of 55. He is preceded in death by his mother, Monica Derks and is survived by his father, Bob Derks, sister, Sharon Ferguson, brother, Kelly Derks, and nieces, Jillian and Lauren Ferguson. Mike also cultivated many cherished friendships in West Maui.
Mike excelled at gardening and found great satisfaction in tending plants and succeeded at it brilliantly. He enjoyed diving in earlier days, jet-skiing, and spending time with friends. He loved and doted on his dogs, Sophie and Jack, testifying to his undeniable affection and kindness. Mike took great pride in his home and garden and spent much of his free time keeping both in meticulous condition.
After completion of a HVAC program at a technical school in Phoenix, Arizona he was employed with the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua for many years in the Engineering Department.
Hawaii was Mike's home and would always be his home. His outlook on life captured the true essence and spirit of the islands. He was known for his easy-going nature, generosity, sweet disposition, and down-to-earth attitude. Most of all his warmth and jovial demeanor will be deeply missed. Mike will be forever remembered for his infectious laugh, his willingness to lend a helping hand to friends and family, his dedication to his work, and his gentle spirit.
Services will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 20, 2014, at Sacred Hearts Kapalua.
