The Maui News
Mark Deakos of the Hawaii Association for Marine Education and Research discusses the Olowalu reef’s ecology as a group, which included county and state officials, prepares to snorkel at the Kahekili Herbivore Fisheries Management Area off West Maui on Saturday. The event was hosted by Trilogy Excursions and coordinated by the Coral Reef Alliance, the West Maui Ridge to Reef Initiative and the state Division of Aquatic Resources. The half-day charter aimed to educate decision-makers about the value of and threats to reefs and to engage them in developing ideas for continued and enhanced collaboration. Officials who went snorkeling to explore both healthy and stressed reefs included Maui County Council Members Don Couch, Elle Cochran and Mike Victorino; state Sen. Roz Baker; Rob Parsons, Maui County executive assistant for environmental concerns; state Department of Land and Natural Resources Chairman William Aila; and Matt Yamamoto, Maui branch chief of the Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement.
