Sparrows up for a change of diet

June 4, 2014
The Maui News
A cloud of sparrows descends upon the hand of a passenger of a snorkel cruise waiting to depart from Kihei Boat Ramp on Friday morning. The sparrows were attracted to muffin crumbs. The non-native birds generally eat seeds and small insects, but once they learn to scavenge, sparrows will try just about anything. One of their less flattering nicknames is “Rats With Wings,” and most island eateries urge guests not to feed them.
