Wednesday evening, you may imbibe in Spirits of the Orient in Alan Wong's Amasia at Grand Wailea. Word has it that it will be an exotic tasting of top beverages from Japan and Asia and gourmet cuisine from the star chef and staff.
The standing-room only, walk-around gala is also the second anniversary of the restaurant, and it's sure to be epic. At least six different sake, beer and liquor stations will wet your whistle, including beverages from acclaimed chef Alan Wong's private label selections. Japanese sake and whisky experts will be on hand.
"Alan will do a special dish of unagi with foie gras, miso butterfish and hot Szechuan pepper, and the whole restaurant will be set up with action food and beverage stations, and tray-passed hors d'hoeuvres," says Mia Harriman, general manager.
Amasia lounge ambassador/bartender Max Molechat will assist in serving rare and extraordinary sake.

Action stations will be spread throughout the garden with its koi ponds and rocks from Mount Fuji; in the lounge; the sake room; and in the bar. The celebrated chef himself will also man the noodle bar in the Robata Room, pairing his foods with Nikka Whisky. We also hear he's in town this week to teach the staff how to make an Okinawan Rafute pork-belly dish to be served.
Wong is a world traveler who knows all the nuances of sake-like Sochu from Japan, Sujo from Korea, Awamori from Okinawa and Moutai from China.
"I travel to most of these places and observe that they all have a strong desire to make the best product they can, using what they have around them; and they are very proud of what they make," says Wong. "The trouble is, not a lot of people are aware and know about some great producers and makers. I know the beverages will pair well with our food, and I am looking forward to a great evening."
Wine Director Mark Shishido also brings many wines and grape varietals from all over the world; and a lot of them are on Amasia's wine list. Prized Japanese Hitachino beer will flow. Cost is $125 per person, including tax and tip. Parking is complimentary. Call 891-3954.
