Two Paia School students were among six Hawaii winners in the 2014 International Aviation Art Contest.
Kapio Madrid took first place and Tavarua Wallace took second place in the junior category for students ages 6 to 9. Both are 9-year-olds at Paia School.
The students were honored at a ceremony May 9 at Honolulu International Airport. They received a certificate and cash award.
This year's theme was "Flying Saves Lives" in the contest meant to motivate and encourage young people to become more familiar with and participate in aeronautics, engineering and science.
The annual contest is sponsored by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale, National Aeronautic Association and National Association of State Aviation Officials.
Other Hawaii winners were Kelina Pham-Nguyen, 8, of Maryknoll Academy on Oahu, who placed third in the junior category. Intermediate category winners were Rachelle Marie Lariba, first place; Johnson Campos Jr., second place, and Joseph Payongayong, third place. All three are 13-year-olds at Kapolei Middle School on Oahu.
