Auld Mug brought to Lahaina Yacht Club

Yacht club commodores (from left) Norbert Bajurin of Golden Gate Yacht Club and Lars Bertelsen of Lahaina Yacht Club pose with former Waikiki Yacht Club commodore Gregory Dunn in front of the America’s Cup on Thursday during an event at Lahaina Yacht Club. The trophy was brought to Maui by Bajurin, whose club holds the Auld Mug after Lanai owner Larry Ellison’s Oracle Team USA defeated Emirates Team New Zealand in September. In addition to giving Lahaina Yacht Club members a chance to see the Cup, which was first awarded in 1851, Thursday’s event also included an announcement that a portion of proceeds from sales of Julian Guthrie’s book “The Billionaire and the Mechanic,” which is about the pairing of Ellison and Bajurin, a radiator mechanic, would be donated to the LYC Foundation for the club’s junior sailing program. The Lahaina Yacht Club is also continuing preparation for this year’s Victoria to Maui International Yacht Race, a biennial event that takes sailors from British Columbia to Hawaii and is scheduled to begin July 3.
