Sen. Roz Baker and chef Bev Gannon have been named Women Helping Women's 2014 Angel Award winners.
Women Helping Women operates Maui's domestic violence emergency shelter and offers a support program for victims of domestic violence
"These women exemplify the heroic spirit as angels for women who are abused, and acknowledging their support of Women Helping Women is long overdue," said Women Helping Women Executive Director Stacey Moniz. "In their individual ways, both of these women have been fierce supporters of our agency for many, many years."
"Not only does Roz represent Maui County in the Senate, she also stands behind issues that affect women and children across the state. . . . Her work has been invaluable to helping those who cannot help themselves," said P. Denise LaCosta, who along with Baker is a founding member of the West Maui Domestic Violence Task Force and was instrumental in helping Women Helping Women open its office in Lahaina.
Gannon has been a supporter of Women Helping Women since the mid-1990s, starting with deliveries of her catering leftovers to the emergency shelter and continuing and growing over the years.
"Every year since the late 1990s, Bev shows her generous spirit by shopping for and wrapping individual gifts for each of the women and children in our shelter. She'll call to get the ages and genders for every child in the shelter," said Moniz. "Some years, those are the only gifts the moms get, and they are really very special gifts."
The awards will be presented at Women Helping Women's annual fundraiser May 4 at the King Kamehameha Golf Club. The event's theme this year is "Oh The Places You'll Go: An Evening With Dr. Seuss."
