Good Shepherd Episcopal Church will begin Holy Week on Palm Sunday.
The liturgy and blessing of the palms will take place in the church office courtyard, followed by a processional into the church at 8:30 a.m. Members of the congregation will read the story of Christ's passion, and the Senior Choir will provide special music. A potluck will follow.
Maundy Thursday will be observed by a 7 p.m. service with music by the Senior Choir. The service celebrates the gift of the Holy Eucharist and Christ's example of humble service when he washed the feet of his disciples. At the end of the service, the altar will be stripped. A Garden of Repose will be set up, and prayers can be offered until 10 p.m. Prayers will continue at 10 a.m. Friday.
On Good Friday, the Stations of the Cross will be read at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., a service will include the veneration of the cross and the solemn liturgy. The Senior Choir will provide special music, and communion will be offered from the reserved sacrament.
On April 19, the Great Vigil of Easter begins at 8 p.m. A large candle is first lighted from a new fire which has been kindled in the darkened church. Early Christians used this symbol, seeing in the bringing of light into a dark place a symbol of the Resurrection.
On Easter morning, April 20, the festival eucharist begins at 8:30 a.m. (Those seeking seats in church should come early.) Special music will be presented by the Senior Choir, and the Good Shepherd Hand Bell Choir will ring.
Children will be invited to join in an Easter egg hunt on the church grounds at the conclusion of the morning service, followed by a potluck Easter brunch in the parish hall.
At 11 a.m., the church will celebrate Holy Baptism and Eucharist. Ferdinand Cajigal will lead the music and the Praise and Worship Band.
The church is on the corner of Church and Main streets in Wailuku. For more information, call the church office 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at 244-4656.
