The University of Hawaii baseball team's bid to rally from an eight-run deficit came up short on Saturday in an 8-7 loss to UC Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara, Calif.
The Gauchos (19-4, 1-1 Big West), No. 15 in the Baseball America rankings, led 8-0 after five innings.
The Rainbow Warriors (13-13, 1-1) got on the board in the sixth, and Kaeo Aliviado's bases-loaded triple was part of a five-run rally in the seventh. In the ninth, Matt Miller's two-out single brought in a run, but Steven Pollakov grounded out with two runners on base to end the game.
Santa Barbara starter Austin Pettibone (2-0) pitched five scoreless innings. Dillon Tate pitched the final two innings for his sixth save of the year.
Scott Squier (2-2) permitted six runs in four innings.
The teams are to finish their three-game series today.
