Maui Brewing Co. is partnering with Stone Brewing Co., based in San Diego, to create a craft beer distributor, Maui-Stone Craft Beverages, to bring more craft beers to Hawaii.
"The ultimate goal of this joint venture is to elevate craft beer awareness islandwide and bring more authentic craft beer to Hawaii," said a news release announcing the partnership earlier this month.
Stone will begin shipping bottles and kegs to Maui from San Diego in refrigerated containers, hopefully in April, the news release said. The beer will be stored in a 16,000-square-foot distribution center with a 4,500-square-foot cold storage area.
The brands the new company will be selling include: Maui Brewing Co.; Stone Brewing Co., Escondido, Calif.; AleSmith Brewing Co., San Diego; Avery Brewing Co., Boulder, Colo.; Bear Republic Brewing Co., Healdsburg, Calif.; The Bruery, Placentia, Calif.; Oskar Blues Brewery, Longmont, Colo.; Port Brewing Co./The Lost Abbey, San Marcos, Calif; and Saint Archer Brewing Co., San Diego.
Maui Brewing Founder Garrett Marrero has enjoyed a close relationship with Stone Brewing Co. founders Greg Koch and Steve Wagner, the news release said.
"Ever since Greg and I initially met and shared a cab in 2006 during the Seattle World Beer Cup, we have had a positive and continuously growing relationship as craft beer comrades," said Marrero.
Since 2008, Maui Brewing has employed Stone Distributing Co. to make its craft ales and lagers available to retailers throughout Southern California.
In 2009, Maui Brewing Co. contributed to the collaborative brewing of the Ken Schmidt/Maui/Stone Kona Coffee, Macadamia, Coconut Porter and helped Stone secure special ingredients for the beer through its distributors.
Maui Brewing Co. has a brewery in Lahaina and one brewpub in Kahana that creates more than 40 different styles on a rotating basis.
In 2005, Maui Brewing produced 400 barrels from the single brewpub and expanded into an additional brewery location in 2007, producing a little more than 20,000 barrels in 2013.
Maui Brewing currently is building a state-of-the-art brewery in Kihei. The goal is to begin brewing, drinking and shipping beer from this new brewery in June, the news release said.
