First photo: Former Maui County Ocean Safety Officer supervisor Archie Kalepa offers instruction Sunday at Lahaina Harbor to coaches preparing for the inaugural Maui Interscholastic League surfing season. Coaches from eight schools completed a two-day certification course that included a swim test and life saving skills at the Lahaina Aquatic Center, CPR and first-aid classes at King Kamehameha III Elementary School and ocean risk assessment and ocean rescue training at the Lahaina Harbor and Breakwall surf areas. The first official MIL competition is to take place in April - the league approved the sport in August.
