Less smoke sign of routine maintenance

Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co.’s Puunene mill normally has two smokestacks sending plumes of smoke into the air, but for the past week or so only one smokestack has been operating. HC&S completed its sugar harvesting season in December, and the mill is down for routine maintenance, said Alexander & Baldwin spokeswoman Suzy Hollinger. “Every off-season, we take individual boilers offline to do maintenance and repairs,” she said Monday. All of the boilers are expected to be back up and running before the factory restarts operations in March. A&B is the parent company of HC&S.
