LAHAINA - Chaminade's Christophe Varidel proved he's capable of taking over a game - it simply didn't last into the second half.
Baylor, ranked No. 18 in The Associated Press poll, proved balance to go along with accurate shooting will foil an upset bid.
Gary Franklin scored 22 points and four teammates also reached double figures as the Bears dominated the second half of a 93-77 victory over the Silverswords in the opening round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational on Monday at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Varidel scored 42 points - one shy of the tournament record. In the first half, the senior guard from Switzerland scored 31 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field, including 7-of-10 from 3-point range.
"The first half, I kept thinking about the words 'Maui Magic' because Christophe was definitely on fire," said Baylor coach Scott Drew.
"Chaminade always has a good team, they always compete and they always do well."

9-Kent Murphree, Toledo, vs. Chaminade, 1990.
Varidel was 4-of-12 from the floor in the second half.
The record for points in a Maui game is 43, by Gonzaga's Adam Morrison in a triple-overtime victory over Michigan State in 2005.
Varidel's 10 3-pointers - on 16 attempts - tied the tournament mark set in 2008 by Notre Dame's Kyle McAlarney against North Carolina.
"I would trade (the record and near-record) for the 'W' tonight," said Varidel, who left to a standing ovation with 13 seconds left. "I'm really grateful to play for coach (Eric) Bovaird. He has a lot of confidence in me. I don't think I have had that before in college. I don't shoot too much, don't dribble too much. He just lets me play my game. Those dribble handoffs with Lee (Bailey) are going to do some damage throughout the year."
The next-highest scorer for Chaminade was Tyree Harrison with eight points.
Varidel's previous career high was 30, against Western Oregon earlier this month.
The Bears (5-0) will play Dayton in the semifinals today at 4:30 p.m.
The Silverswords (2-1) will play a consolation game today at 11:30 a.m. against Gonzaga.
Cory Jefferson added 15 points, Brady Heslip had 14 and Kenny Cherry and Royce O'Neale each contributed 12 for the Bears, who opened the second half with a 29-11 run.
"I think that's what makes you a good team, having balance," Drew said. "If they focus on the interior, we have unselfish guys and they are more than capable of knocking down shots and making plays,"
In the first half, the Bears shot 17-of-28 from the field, including 9-of-12 from 3-point range, to take a 50-47 lead. They went up by as many as 24 in the second half, helped by a 30-17 rebounding advantage over the final 20 minutes.
Baylor's Rico Gathers had with 14 rebounds and Jefferson nine. Jefferson and Isaiah Aus-tin each blocked three shots.
"I thought we played really well for about 33 to 35 minutes," Bovaird said. "There was a stretch there where we couldn't buy a basket, but we were able to battle back there. I'm really proud of the guys, they played really tough. There's definitely 7-1 (Austin) and 6-10 (Jefferson) guys that are probably going to be NBA guys pretty soon. Our game plan was to make them make outside shots and it worked for a while."
