November 25, 2013
The Maui News

The two freshmen in the Maui field who played in this year's McDonald's All-American game - Bobby Portis of Arkansas and Jabari Bird of California - will go head to head today. Portis, who also was chosen for the Nike Hoop Summit and Jordan Brand Classic, was ranked as a top-16 recruit in the nation by ESPN, scout.com and rivals.com. He won four Arkansas state titles at Hall High School, and as a senior averaged 20.4 points, 10.3 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game. With the Razorbacks this season, the 6-foot-10 forward has averaged 9.3 points and 4.0 rebounds. Bird's Salesian (Calif.) High School team went 100-8 in his three seasons, and he averaged 17.2 points per game as a senior. He was a five-star prospect with rivals.com, as a guard, and with scout.com, as a forward. Listed as a 6-6 guard on the Cal roster, son of former Golden Bears standout Carl Bird is the team's leading scorer so far this season, averaging 13.5 points while going 9-for-18 from 3-point range.
