Journey alongside Maui resident W.S. Merwin, U.S. poet laureate, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and environmental activist. "Even Though the Whole World is Burning," a feature documentary on Merwin's life and work, will screen tonight from 7:30 to 9 at Seabury Hall's 'A'ali'ikuhonua Creative Arts Center in Makawao. The film is a lyrical journey along the trajectory of Merwin's life that travels from New York to France to Hawaii. "An intimate portrait of the man, the documentary gathers verite footage of Merwin and family members, poets and influences that shaped his life," according to a release. It features exclusive interviews with literary critic Harold Bloom, "Mad Men" creator Matt Weiner and Hawaiian cultural scholar Dr. Pualani Kanahele. "Even Though the Whole World is Burning" is directed by Maui-based filmmaker Stefan Schaefer and produced by Williams Cole. Event includes an introduction by bestselling author John Burnham Schwartz, with a poem read by actor Hector Elizondo. Audience Q&A with the director will follow the screening. A prefilm reception includes appetizers, wine and an opportunity to visit with the Merwins and the filmmakers. But with the sun unrelenting, sharks circling and his meager supplies dwindling, the ever-resourceful sailor soon finds himself staring his mortality in the face.

After nearly 15 years apart, college pals have seen fortunes made and lost, children born and their share of mistakes. They meet up over Christmas and quickly discover how easy it is for long-forgotten rivalries and romances to be reignited.

This far-from-comfortable film takes viewers on an unflinchingly brutal look at American slavery. Chiwetel Ejiofor stars as Solomon Northup, a New York citizen who was kidnapped and made to work on a plantation in New Orleans in the 1800s. Steve McQueen directs from a script he cowrote with John Ridley, based in part by Northup's memoir. Starring Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sarah Paulson and Paul Giamatti.
