HONOLULU (AP) - University of Hawaii athletic director Ben Jay was hospitalized from injuries suffered while intervening during a crowd disturbance following Sunday's UH-West Virginia women's basketball game at the Stan Sheriff Center.
A CT scan revealed transverse process fractures in Jay's lumbar region (L1, L2, and L3) and bleeding around one of his kidneys. He was admitted to Straub Clinic and Hospital on Monday and was expected to be discharged Tuesday.
Jay was injured during a disturbance that started behind the Mountaineers' bench while the teams were awaiting the Rainbow Wahine Classic awards ceremony.
Heckling from both sides took place during the game, which was won by West Virginia 59-56.
Jay, in his second year as UH athletic director, will continue to work from home and will not accompany the UH football team on its final road trip to Wyoming on Saturday.
