Makani Road in Makawao was closed Wednesday afternoon after a head-on collision sent five people to the hospital, police said.
The crash occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m. when a 2007 Honda Fit traveling south collided with a 2009 Honda Civic going in the opposite direction at the road's centerline, said Lt. Ricky Uedoi, commander of the Maui Police Department's Traffic Section. The road located below Kalama Intermediate School was closed from Mikiola Street to Pau Hana Road. It reopened shortly after 4 p.m.
A 50-year-old Makawao woman driving the Honda Fit was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition. Later, her condition was downgraded by doctors who said her injuries were not life threatening, Uedoi said. Four Lahaina residents in the Honda Civic were taken to the hospital - including the 28-year-old driver. All were reported to have sustained nonlife-threatening injuries.
The smashed remains of two vehicles remain at the scene of a head-on crash in Makawao that sent five people to the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

Through investigation, police believe the Honda Civic crossed over to the left lane and collided with the Honda Fit as the Makawao woman swerved to avoid the car, Uedoi said.
