Man killed when moped hits car
A 36-year-old man is dead after the moped he was driving collided with a car Saturday night on Kokomo Road in Haiku, Maui police said.
The collision happened at 10:38 p.m., approximately 120 feet north of Lilikoi Road.
The man, who is believed to be from Washington state, was driving a black 2012 Ningbo moped north on Kokomo Road when he crossed the centerline and collided with a south-bound gray 2003 Audi A4 driven by a 43-year-old Haiku woman, police said.
The man sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. Police said that he was not wearing a helmet.
The Audi driver and her passengers, a 20-year-old Haiku man and a 17-year-old Makawao girl, were all wearing seat belts and were not injured.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
This is Maui County's 13th traffic fatality this year. There were 20 at this same time last year.
Tire fire near sugar mill extinquished
A fire reported near Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co.'s Puunene sugar mill was extinguished late Saturday, a fire official said.
Crews from Kahului, Wailuku and Wailea responded to the fire off of Hansen Road at 5:15 p.m., Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga reported.
The fire involved approximately 200 heavy-equipment tires in a pit to the rear of the mill.
The blaze was brought under control at 7:50 p.m. Saturday and extinguished by 10:30 p.m., Mainaga said.
The tires, considered scrap, had no monetary value. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
Waihee Beach Park to close for work
Waihee Beach Park will be closed from Nov. 12 to Dec. 15 for renovation and maintenance of the restroom and the park facility, according to a news release from the county Department of Parks and Recreation.
The bathroom improvements will include painting and upgrades to plumbing fixtures. Additionally, the park area will be manicured, with branches trimmed, irrigation system repaired and debris removed.
