Forest of potted trees readied for giveaway

November 2, 2013
The Maui News
Lihikai Elementary School 1st-grader Olena Barrett, 6, helps her grandmother Kella Tejada-Figueroa label plants Friday morning at the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, located off Kanaloa Avenue in Kahului. Volunteers and staff were busy preparing for today’s Arbor Day Hawaiian Tree Giveaway from 9 a.m. to noon. During the annual celebration, 1,000 native Hawaiian trees are to be given away free — one plant per person. Tejada-Figueroa said that several years ago she joined the gardens’ Weed and Pot Club that meets every Wednesday, and she has come to love the camaraderie and opportunity to help out. And that means her family also gets to help.
