Get ready Maui film buffs! Director Barry Rivers announces his 2014 Maui Film Festival at Wailea will take place earlier than ever next year. Opening night will be Wednesday, June 4, running through Sunday, June 8.
"The move was made to put some distance between Maui's fifth annual celebration of cinema and the cluster of other festivals that will take place later in June, so accepted films and filmmakers will be able to stand alone in the spotlight of the planetary film festival calendar," Rivers explains.
"While final plans are still in the oven," Rivers continues, "The tributes, the filmmakers panels and the culinary arts celebrations that have made the event what it is, will again light up Maui's own 'don't miss' event."
Rivers also wants to let Maui film goers know more details on his 15th annual FirstLight: Academy Screenings on Maui to be shown at Maui Arts & Cultural Center this year.
"We will again premiere many of the most award-worthy films of the year," he adds. "It will take place in late November and also between mid-December and early January."
While not yet releasing specific film titles or play dates, Rivers does reveal that Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson, Olivia Wilde, Rooney Mara and Amy Adams are among the many stars and breakthrough talent appearing in FirstLight films. This year's event is also making plans to grow its selection of features submitted for both Foreign Language, Documentary and Short Film Academy Award consideration.
As always, FirstLight provides complimentary admission to most members of the film industry major guilds. Members of the Maui community and island guests can also enjoy FirstLight via ticket or pass purchase. Visit www.mauifilmfestival.com for details and get schedule updates in early November.
