A donation of weight training equipment is being used daily by police officers and employees at the Molokai Police Station, which received the equipment in September.
"It's been phenomenal for us," said Capt. John Jakubczak, commander of the Molokai Patrol District. "We're really appreciative."
The equipment, valued at about $5,000, was donated by Maui resident Susan Moulton, who didn't need the equipment that she acquired when she purchased her home, according to a Maui County Council resolution authorizing acceptance of the donation.
Weight training equipment, valued at $5,000, was donated by Maui resident Susan Moulton to the Molokai Police Station.
The donation was facilitat-ed by retired Maui police officer Lawrence Kauha'aha'a, who is among board members of the Will Smith Foundation.
The nonprofit foundation was named for Moulton's 8-year-old son, Will Smith, who was killed in a traffic collision on Maui in June 2007.
The donated equipment is set up in the former Fire Department quarters that were taken over by police when firefighters moved into a new station in Kaunakakai, Jakubczak said. He said that the equipment includes a pec deck fly machine, ham tractor, leg press machine and a set of free weights ranging from 10 to 60 pounds with a rack.
"I use it every day," said Jakubczak, who also sees many of the station's 29 personnel using the equipment. "The majority of them use it and they use it every day.
"It's been great. People now have no excuse to not start working out."
