The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force on Tuesday arrested 41-year-old John Nichols of Maui, who was wanted on a negligent homicide arrest warrant issued in June 2012 by 2nd Circuit Court.
In January 2012, Nichols was arrested for allegedly killing another person as he was driving a vehicle while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, a U.S. Marshals Service news release said. Shortly after being released, Nichols fled Maui.
Earlier this month, Maui Police Department Hana Patrol officers received information that Nichols may have been using the name Ricky Johnson and was residing in California. The information was referred to the Hawaii Fugitive Task Force that relayed the information to U.S. Marshals in the Central District of California.
On Tuesday around 8:15 p.m., deputy U.S. Marshals and officers from the Huntington Beach Police Department Fugitive Team located and arrested Nichols at a residence on Sunbreeze Drive in Huntington Beach, Calif. Nichols was using the name Ricky Johnson.
He was booked at the Huntington Beach Police Department and is being housed at the Orange County Sheriff's detention facility where he awaits extradition back to Maui.
The Hawaii Fugitive Task Force includes the Hawaii State Sheriffs, Maui Police Department, Hawaii Police Department, Kauai Police Department, Honolulu Police Department, state Attorney General's Office and City and County Prosecutor's Office.
