Paving way with day of hope

Runners navigate the rolling hills of Makena Road on Saturday morning while taking part in the 24th annual Day of Hope 10K Run / 5K Run/Walk at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea benefit for Maui’s Pacific Cancer Foundation. Maui runners Matt Holton and Cristina Pineda won the men’s and women’s 5K races, while three-time Xterra women’s champion Melanie McQuaid won the 10K overall, followed by Dr. Sally Daganzo of Maui. Jay Danek of Scottsdale, Ariz., won the men’s 10K, finishing third overall. Overall, 341 runners and walkers officially finished the event. The oldest runner was Robert Miller, 84, and youngest Layla Tinkler, 5.
