The 23rd Hula O Na Keiki, Maui's only children's hula competition, is set for Nov. 8-10 at Ka'anapali Beach Hotel.
Tickets are available at Ka'anapali Beach Hotel's Ohana Fun Center, 667-0129. Prices are $25 for premium seating and $20 and $15 for other seating, each day. This year's participants are to include halau from Maui, Oahu, California and Japan.
Children aged 5 to 17 compete as soloists and as boy-and-girl pairs. The competition includes a judge's interview as well as performances in both kahiko (ancient) and auana (modern) dance categories. The students are judged on their proficiency in Hawaiian language and the appropriateness of their costume.
To complement the keiki hula competition, weekend festivities at the hotel will include arts and crafts from all islands, cultural and hula workshops, and Hawaiian entertainment.
The Hawaiian Festival of Arts and Crafts is to run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 8 and 9. The doors for the competition are to open at 3 p.m. Nov. 8 and at 1 p.m. Nov. 9.
