Two airlifted to safety on Lanai
Two members of a hunting party were airlifted to safety Saturday afternoon from Lanai's Mahana area above Shipwreck Beach, a fire official said.
Firefighters received the alarm at 4 p.m. Saturday, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
The two men, 57 and 63 years old, were located by firefighters on Air One and airlifted to a landing zone set up on Keomoku Road near the entrance to Mahana Road, he said.
The 57-year-old man was transported by medics to Lanai General Hospital with a back injury. The other man was airlifted out due to fatigue and did not require transport to the hospital, Mainaga said.
DHHL sets Maui County meetings
The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands will be holding meetings statewide - including in Maui County in November - to help develop a water policy plan.
The plan will guide the DHHL as it manages and invests in water resources and rights of the trust, a news release said. Among the issues DHHL hopes attendees will address are the rights DHHL has to assert, how to balance development and protection of water and the most critical water issues in the communities.
The meetings in Maui County will be held Nov. 4 at the Lanikeha Community Center on Molokai, Nov. 7 in the Lanai Elementary and High School cafeteria and Nov. 14 at the DHHL Paukukalo Community Center in Central Maui.
All meetings are from 6 to 8 p.m.
