1938 - The News-Box, Wailuku High School newspaper, was awarded international first place in the annual Quill and Scroll contest conducted by the Medill School of Journalism of Northwestern University. Esther Goo is the editor, and Kiyoto Tsubaki is the adviser of the paper.

1963 - Liquidation of former Grove Ranch pasture lands and cattle was assured last Saturday following a public auction held by the Land Department of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. As the result of the auction, A&B has leased a total of 8,823 acres for annual rentals amounting to $21,539. Additionally 903 heads of cattle were sold for a total price of $117,070.

1988 - Nitto Hawaii Ltd. has purchased the Silversword Golf Course from the limited partnership that developed it. Japanese companies now own three golf courses on Maui. There are a total of eight domestically owned courses on Maui: two each at Wailea, Kaanapali and Kapalua, nine holes at Maui Country Club and the municipal course at Waiehu.

2003 - That rooster crowing at 5 a.m. is an unwelcome wake-up call to some residents, but it's music to the ears of others. A proposal to ban roosters and other fowl from residential areas brought sharply divided comments Tuesday afternoon, and some Maui County Council members feared they were faced with making a lose-lose decision.
