Congregation to form mission community
An Eastern Christian congregation is forming as a mission community, according to an announcement from the Rev. Iosef Poustinia.
This past Sunday marked the beginning of the new year for Eastern Christians of Orthodox, Eastern-Rite Catholicism and Oriental Orthodoxy, Poustinia said.
The Maui community is called the Dormition of the Holy Theotokos Eastern Church.

Church to celebrate its fifth-Sunday Mass
St. Joseph Catholic Church (Mission) in Kaupo celebrates Mass only when there's a fifth Sunday in the month, and it will do so at noon Sept. 29.
The Hawaiian Choir from Sacred Heart Mission at Kapalua, under the directorship of 92-year-old Henrietta Mahuna, will provide music. Fellowship and a potluck lunch will follow Mass.

Great Autumn Festival slated for Sept. 14
The Maui Jinsha Mission will hold its Great Autumn Festival on Sept. 14, beginning with a church service at 4:30 p.m. and followed by dinner at 5:30 p.m. and entertainment an hour later, according to an announcement.
The festival will feature performances by Zenshin Daiko, the Maui Buyo Dance Academy (directed by Matsudai Mitsuyae and Yaeko Yamamoto), Nakayama Minyo Kai and the talented karaoke singers of Alvin Iwamoto and friends.

Sasaki will guest lecture mission's event
Makawao Hongwanji Mission will host the 2013 Nembutsu Seminar titled "Jodo Shin Buddhism - The Easy Path To Buddhism?" on Sept. 28 and 29.
The Rev. LaVerne Sasaki will be the guest lecturer. Sasaki is a third-generation Buddhist minister in North America.
One of Sasaki's topics will be "Jodo Shin or Nembutsu Buddhist way is personal awareness and experience, which enables one to assist in difficulties in life in various ways."
Registration is $20 and includes lunch. The deadline to register is Sept. 20.
