AS MAUI TURNS . . .. . . I stopped by the Maui Coast Hotel in Kihei the other day, where epic restaurateurs Mike and Dana Pastula are busy getting ready to open their latest venture.
Called 'ami 'ami after the sexy hula movement of the hips, it will be open for breakfast and dinner in the next few days, while the Pastula's Kamaole Poolside Cafe at Maui Coast continues to serve lunch, etc.
"Ta da! 'ami 'ami will have a dance floor!" says Dana. "There wasn't a fun lounge in Kihei before, and this will be it. We've built a large bar, have the beautiful courtyard lanai, Plumeria Room for private parties, and we'll have lots of fun appetizers, steaks and seafood."
Lorenzo and Michelle Fabiani will open a new Fabiani’s in the Wailea Gateway this week, for breakfast.

Sugar Cane Maui plans to open Friday in the old Famous Dave's location on Front Street. Chef-owner Philippe Chin is French Chinese, born in Paris, and he helped put French-fusion food on the U.S. map with his famous Chanterelles restaurant in Philadelphia.
"Sam Choy has been begging me to come to Hawaii for 20 years," he says. "He's here today, helping me out. It will be good food, and all scratch kitchen with the same menu from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. But it will change daily depending upon what is fresh."
Bob Dye, whose great-grandfather founded the original Ellen Dye Candies that predated Hawaiian Host as being the first company to dip macadamia nuts into chocolate, has some big news. No, not about the Shops at Wailea, where he serves as general manager, but about his newest venture, Waimea Chocolate Co.
"I presented it to Neiman Marcus about three weeks ago, and they just loved the product and the story behind it," says Dye. "It's not on the shelves yet, but it will be soon and it's really exciting."
We hear that Foodland will open a new 35,000-square-foot store at Kehalani in Central Maui in the spring of 2014. It will be located next to Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, which will have a drive thru for gourmet caffeine lovers.
But it's still a mystery which restaurants are going into the upcoming Weinberg shopping complex across the street from Baldwin High School.
I did hear that Safeway should open Sept. 20. But, "There is really no firm commitment yet," as far as restaurants are concerned," says project architect Lloyd Sueda. "They're still working on it. No news to report."
Fabiani's Wailea is targeted to open in the next few days in Wailea Gateway, the same mall as Monkeypod Kitchen and Pita Paradise. It's smaller than it's sister Kihei restaurant, Fabiani's Pizza and Bakery, and will start off with breakfast only for awhile.
The menu just pops with red-velvet pancakes with shaved dark chocolate and seasonal berries, breakfast pizzas with fresh spinach, tomatoes, cheddar and scrambled eggs with a creme fraiche base; and the Elvis panini with peanut butter, honey and bananas on focaccia.
Owners Lorenzo and Michelle Fabiani have hired Chef Michael Cantin to take over the kitchen. He was formerly with Ferraro's at the Four Seasons and the Italian lunch and dinner menu will launch soon.
