President Barack Obama has handed our congressional delegation a rare opportunity to speak up on the proposed use of military force in Syria.
I urge Sen. Brian Schatz, Sen. Mazie Hirono and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard to vote no on the authorization for the use of military force in Syria. Bombs and cruise missiles will only escalate the violence and risk drawing us in to an even wider war.
Our president has no legal constitutional authority to attack another country where there is no imminent threat to the U.S. Congress has not declared war on Syria nor has the U.N. Security Council authorized the use of force. The end result will be more innocent people killed, another country further destroyed. How many more countries will the U.S. turn to rubble? Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Iran?
Obama campaigned on ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and reducing U.S. involvement. An attack on Syria will reverse this policy.
By voting no to bombs and cruise missiles we send a clear message to the president to stay on the more peaceful course that helped him get elected. Put the $1.3 million spent for every cruise missile into food, medicine, shelter, schools, health care, job creation and other unmet human needs.
