Work to close portion of South Kihei Road
Emergency repairs to the Waiakoa culvert near the old Suda Store will require the closure of South Kihei Road in the work area from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 3.
The work involves the installation of -inch steel plates over the culvert to relieve stress on the deteriorating structure, the county Department of Public Works said.
During the road closure, motorists will not be able to access South Kihei Road from the north and will be routed onto Piilani Highway.
Motorists approaching from the south will be detoured onto Uwapo Road.
Brush fire burns one acre in Wailuku
Firefighters battled a 1-acre brush fire near the Halekii-Pihana Heiau State Monument in Wailuku on Monday afternoon.
Units from Wailuku and Kahului responded to the 2:07 p.m. call of a brush fire at the end of Piihana Road, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
The fire was under control at 3:30 p.m. and extinguished at 4:30 p.m.
No structures were threatened and no injuries or monetary damage were reported.
The cause of the fire was undetermined, he said.
Boy, 16 months, injured in fall from window
A 16-month-old boy was critically injured when he fell from a second-story window of a Makawao residence Saturday morning, police said.
Officers responded to the accident at 10:17 a.m. on Makaleha Place.
The Kihei boy was being watched by a relative, who was about 4 feet away when the child fell from the window, which is above a couch, police said. The drop was about 16 feet, police said.
The child was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition, then flown to Oahu for further treatment as a precaution, police said.
