The Maui County Council has joined the social media age with its own blog, Facebook page and Twitter account, Council Chairwoman Gladys Baisa said Tuesday.
The public may communicate with the council via the council's Twitter handle @mauicounty, on Facebook at facebook.com/mauicountycouncil, and at mauicounty.gov/council.
Baisa's goal is to increase "government transparency and efficiency" to create better legislation and constituent services.
Posts will highlight upcoming agenda items and information on council and committee meetings and legislative initiatives. The social media accounts, which are envisioned to provide timely information about council business, will be managed primarily by the Office of Council Services.
News shared recently through the new forums include council Vice Chairman Robert Carroll's tree protection bill, Council Member Mike White's proposed nepotism policy, and the installation of Council Member G. Riki Hokama as first vice president of the National Association of Counties.
"Maui County's residents are finding ways to stay connected even though they are busy working and raising families," Baisa said. "We hope to bring the Council Chamber a little closer to them and make government information a little more accessible through the council's social media presence."
