1913 - On Wednesday last, the first anniversary of the death of the late Japanese emperor was observed in Wailuku and the surrounding district. A general holiday for the Japanese was proclaimed, and all the businessmen and the plantation people laid off for the day.

1938 - Movie fans are about to have their hopes realized for something new and enchanting in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, the first Walt Disney animated film to be made in full feature length, in Technicolor, with dialog, songs, dances and the complete musical score.

1963 - Detailed plans for a proposed aerial tramway near Olowalu will be presented to the Maui Planning and Traffic Commission next Tuesday in the Board of Supervisors' chambers. The extent and manner of the operations will be explained in detail.

1988 - Some 5,000 people polished off an estimated 300 gallons of ice cream yesterday during the Great Summer Ice Cream Festival at War Memorial Baseball Stadium. Christie Wurm followed her coach Jessie Edwards' advice: "scahf, scahf, graind, suck 'em up." Wurm tied for first in the sundae-eating contest with Shawn Murphy.

2003 - Upcountry churchgoers support the national leadership of the Episcopal church in the wake of a church convention naming the first openly gay bishop in New Hampshire. Members of St. John's Episcopal Church said on Sunday that the confirmation of Bishop-elect V. Gene Robinson was an investment in the church's future.
