A Kihei man arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl in her family's apartment complex on Keonekai Road in Kihei was charged Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Zdenek Behuncik, 60, was charged with two counts of first-degree sexual assault and first-degree burglary. His bail was set at $150,000.
The incident, which was reported at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, occurred in the girl's bedroom where her mother and sister also were sleeping, said Lt. Jayson Rego of the Criminal Investigation Division. He said Behuncik entered the unit from the front door, which was unsecured, and sexually assaulted the girl.
The girl, who was crying, woke her mother and said a man was in the bedroom, Rego said. After the mother called police, she found Behuncik staring at them from the doorway with a flashlight in his mouth.
When the mother asked Behuncik what he was doing there, he ran out of the unit, Rego said.
The mother, who knew Behuncik as a neighbor, could not recognize him during the incident due to the darkness but described the assailant as wearing a dark-colored shirt and having a beard, Rego said.
He said Kihei patrol officers responding to her call located Behuncik, who fit the description given by the mother, and arrested him in the parking lot shortly after the sexual assault.
A Czech interpreter was requested for Behuncik when he made an initial appearance Thursday afternoon in Wailuku District Court. He was ordered to stay away from the girl, her mother and their apartment.
