Ocean enthusiasts and photography hobbyists are invited to capture the beauty of Hawaii's marine life in Maui Ocean Center's third annual "I Love Marine Life" photo contest for the chance to win a year membership to the center and a photo eco tour with Photo Safari Hawaii. This photo contest is open to everyone. The last day to submit an entry is by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15. In conjunction with Lahaina's Second Friday Town party, local artist Joelle C. will do a painting demonstration at the Joelle C. Gallery from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday.
Widely collected, her art is unique and it encompasses various media. She will also be displaying her two most recent pieces, using her technique of painting on hand-carved wood panels. Maui Hands Gallery at Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa in Kaanapali will present a live oil-painting demonstration by artist Cecilia Bahena from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on three Mondays, starting next week on July 15 and continuing on July 22 and 29.
Bahena attended the Foss school of Fine Art in Honolulu, mastering color, figure drawing and painting. She also studied portrait painting with acclaimed portrait artist Daniel Green. In 1989, she moved permanently to Maui and began to study renaissance painting with Yoshiko Fujita. She also became a plein-air painter and has gathered with Maui's best landscape artists.
