Hongwanji plans garage sale, bazaar
Makawao Hongwanji Mission will hold its annual garage sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. The event will continue from 7 a.m. to noon on Sunday. It will feature a bazaar with chow fun, pickled peaches, bentos, baked goods, preserves, plants and fresh produce.
The garage sale on Saturday and Sunday occupies more than 3,000 square feet with a large assortment of clothing, furniture, appliances, cookware and collectables.

Kidney meeting to feature 2 speakers
Abigail de la Cruz, a social worker with Liberty Dialysis on Maui, and Carlys Higuchi, an optometrist with Maui Optix, will be guest speakers at a support group meeting sponsored by the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii and Hawaii Organ Transplant Support Group from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 11.
The meeting will take place in the Liberty Dialysis conference room at 105 Maui Lani Parkway in Wailuku.
The support group meeting is for kidney patients and their caregivers.

BHS schedules to be available for pickup
Baldwin High School student schedules will be available for pre-registered students, by class, on the following days and times:
* Seniors, 8 to 10 a.m. Tuesday.
* Juniors, 8 to 10 a.m. July 10.
* Sophomores, 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 10.
* Freshmen, 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Registration fees, lunch payments, parking fees and bus payments will be accepted. Applications for bus and parking will be available.
Applications for free or reduced lunch will be passed out on the first day of school. Applications also are available online at www.ezmealapp.com.
Physical education uniforms will be sold on the freshmen registration day only. Student IDs and locker sign up will also be done.
Cash will be the only accepted form of payment. No checks will be accepted. For more information, call the main office at 984-5656.
The first day of school for incoming freshmen and new students in all grades will be on Aug. 5. All other students report to school on Aug. 6.
Kalama Heights plans several free events
Kalama Heights retirement residence will be hosting a number of independence-themed events next weekend. Each event is free and open to the public. Kalama Heights is located at 101 Kanani Road in Kihei.

Native forest birds topic of presentation
A researcher with the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project will discuss the natural history of the forest birds, the conservation issues they face and what is being done to help them as part of a lecture series from 6 to 8 p.m Tuesday in Kihei.
Laura Berthold will present photos, video and sound during her "Maui's Native Forest Birds: Past Present and Future" presentation at the Kihei Conference Room of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary at 726 S. Kihei Road.
Berthold currently works on assisting and leading the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project field team with researching the Maui Parrotbill or Kiwikiu and helping restore habitat.
Sugar museum part of national program
The Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum has joined museums and art centers nationwide in becoming a Blue Star Museum, which means active-duty service members and their families will receive free entrance from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Blue Star Museums is a partnership among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, Joining Forces, MetLife Foundation and more than 2,000 museums across America.
"The Sugar Museum provides free entrance to active and retired military and their immediate families all during the year," said Roslyn Lightfoot, museum director. "We are proud to support and be a part of the Blue Star Museum program."
The museum is located directly across from the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar mill in Puunene.
