Monday-July 24-Basketball Maui camps at Maui Preparatory Academy in Lahaina for youths in grades 2-12 are scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays this week and July 22-24, and three consecutive days July 17-19, all from 8 to 11 a.m. each day. Monday-July 25-Maui Rugby will conduct free open sessions on Mondays at Kenolio Park in Kihei, Tuesdays at the Lahaina Recreation Center and Thursdays at the Kahului Community Center, with a nontackle format from 5 to 6 p.m., and tackle events from 6 to 7 p.m. Pita Totau, a former U.S. national club champion, will organize the Kihei sessions. Nuti Pousima, a U.S. under-17 trials qualifier, will be in charge in Lahaina and Siua Lolohea, a Maui Warriors captain, will run the Kahului practices. Participants must be at least 10 years old, and training in refereeing and coaching will also be available for adults. Scrimmages are also scheduled for each of the next four Saturdays in preparation for the Sia Siakumi Youth Memorial Tournament, set for July 26-27.
Aug 1-3-Two former members of U.S. World Cup teams will offer instruction at a Team Soccer Direct camp scheduled for Aug. 1-3 at Maui Waena Intermediate School in Kahului. Participants will learn from Paul Caligiuri and Thomas Dooley, both of whom played in two World Cups, as well as UC Irvine coach George Juntz. For players up to age 14, the camp is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, and the cost is $135. The fee for a half-day camp - from 9 a.m. to noon - for the age division is $90. For under-14 through under-18 players, sessions are scheduled for 12:30-2 p.m. each day, and the fee is $90. A coaches clinic is scheduled for 5-6:30 p.m. on each of the camp's final two days, and the fee is $50.
