A free program titled "Discovering the Classics with Papa Lopaka" will take place at 3 p.m. today in the children's section of Kihei Public Library.
Papa Lopaka (Robert DeVinck) will present a reading of his "Classics Illustrated" comic book, "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain.
There will be a brief discussion and an question-and-answer session, and Lopaka will encourage children to read the original book.
The one-hour program is recommended for ages 5 and older and will include light snacks and refreshments provided by the Kay A. Edwards Memorial Fund. Papa Lopaka is a writer, English literature scholar and longtime reader of classic books.
From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 18, the library will offer another free program titled "Discover UH Graduate and Undergraduate Degree Programs Available on Maui."
Adults are invited to attend. The presentation will be conducted by University of Hawaii Center, Maui staff members.
Participants will learn about various degrees offered to Valley Isle residents through the center's distance learning program.
All children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Contact the library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed for these programs.
