Honolulu Weekly struggling, set to fold
HONOLULU - The publisher of Honolulu Weekly said Wednesday that the local newspaper is shutting down after struggling to maintain revenue and trying unsuccessfully to find a buyer.
Publisher Laurie Carlson said in an open letter published in the free weekly's final issue that the 23-year-old paper has been struggling.
"I am sad about closing but I see no way that we can maintain our revenue stream and our fiscal health," Carlson said. "Things have gone from manageable with great stress to bleak."
Carlson said efforts over the past few months to bring in more advertising revenue have had little success, with existing advertisers leaving as new ones sign up.
Carlson said she is choosing to close while the newspaper can still meet its debts and obligations.
