WAILUKU - Jordan Hoiem missed most of Wednesday's assembly at Baldwin High School.
When his name was called - for the second time - he had made it to the gym for the end of the festivities.
It was certainly worth being present for the recognition he received.
Hoiem, a 6-foot-4, 218-pound junior linebacker who has verbally committed to Oregon, was announced as a nominee for next year's U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He is one of 400 nominees nationally and the only one from Hawaii.
"It's an honor to think that they are nominating me, a boy from Hawaii, Maui," he said. "It's really an honor, it's great."
Hoiem missed most of the assembly while retrieving a backpack that he left in a classroom, but got back in time for classmates to congratulate him with a rousing ovation.
"I just have to stay humble and not let it get to my head," Hoiem said. "There's a lot of great players out there. I guess this is what it is - I'm very thankful to be part of it."
Hoiem is rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and Scout.com, and a four-star by 247sports.com.
Approximately 100 players are selected annually from the pool of nominees - Reeve Koehler of Saint Louis and Scott Pagano of Moanalua were part of this year's contest.
"I am going to focus on the year first, but if I do attend that game that would be amazing, just for the experience," Hoiem said.
Hoiem said he wants to reach 225 pounds for his senior season and perhaps 230 for his freshman season at Oregon.
"I want to get my weight up first and then maybe get heavier and then cut down as I work on my speed," he said. "I am definitely going to maintain my speed."
He will be in Eugene, Ore., on June 9 for a Nike Football Training Camp and if he does well there he could get an invite to "The Opening," a four-day camp in July for the top players in the nation at Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.
"Just train, hopefully I do good up there and just have fun," Hoiem said. "You have got to show up and impress somebody to get to The Opening. Hopefully I can do that."
